INS Kavaratti (P31) is an anti-submarine warfare corvette of the Indian Navy built under Project 28. It is the fourth and final ship of the Kamorta class. The vessel was constructed at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata and was commissioned on 22 October 2020.
The Kamorta-class corvettes are the first warships to be designed by the Indian Navy's Directorate of Naval Design (DND) with a significant degree of indigenous content (over 90%), including weapons, sensors and equipment. The ships are built for anti-submarine warfare with a distinctive stepped hull, wedge-shaped superstructure, and extensive use of carbon composite materials for stealth.
Features
The ship is equipped with advanced sonars, torpedo systems, and rocket launchers for anti-submarine operations. Its carbon fibre composite superstructure reduces radar cross-section significantly. The design incorporates a helicopter deck and hangar for embarked helicopters to enhance ASW capability.
