The OTO Melara 76mm gun, marketed as the OTO 76/62 Gun Mount, is a naval autocannon built and designed by the Italian defence company OTO Melara. It is based on the OTO Melara 76/62C and has evolved toward the 76/62 SR and 76/62 Strales variants.
The system is compact enough to be installed on relatively small warships. Its high rate of fire and the availability of several types of ammunition make it capable of short-range anti-missile point defence, anti-aircraft, anti-surface, and ground support. Ammunition includes armour-piercing, incendiary, directed fragmentation effects, and a guided round capable of destroying maneuvering anti-ship missiles.
Global Adoption
The OTO Melara 76mm has been widely exported and is in use by sixty navies. It was favored over the French 100mm naval gun for the joint French/Italian Horizon-class frigate project and FREMM frigate.
Indian Production
The Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) variant is being license-manufactured in India by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) at its Haridwar plant since 1994. Multiple Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard warships have deployed the SRGM. On 28 November 2023, BHEL received a contract worth ₹2,956.89 crore (US$350 million) to manufacture 16 upgraded SRGM guns. INS Nilgiri is the first Indian Navy ship to feature the OTO Melara Strales variant.
