The IAI Heron (Machatz-1) is a medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by the Malat division of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). It is used by the Indian Navy, Indian Army, and Indian Air Force for reconnaissance and surveillance missions.
Capabilities
The Heron UAV is capable of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) operations of up to 52 hours' duration at altitudes up to 10.5 km (35,000 ft). It has demonstrated 52 hours of continuous flight, though effective operational flight duration is less depending on payload and flight profile. It is equipped with a range of sensors including electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) cameras, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and maritime patrol radar, making it ideal for long-range maritime surveillance.
Indian Navy Use
The Indian Navy uses the Heron for maritime domain awareness, monitoring India's extensive coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), tracking vessels of interest, and supporting search and rescue operations. The UAV provides real-time intelligence to naval commanders.
