INS Chakra refers to nuclear-powered attack submarines leased by India from Russia. The Indian Navy has operated two submarines under this name.
INS Chakra (1987) was formerly the Charlie-class submarine K-43, leased in 1987 from Russia and returned in 1991 after four years of service. This gave India invaluable experience in operating nuclear-powered submarines.
INS Chakra (2011) was formerly the Akula-class submarine Nerpa, leased from Russia in 2011 and returned in 2021. During her service, she significantly enhanced the Indian Navy's submarine warfare capabilities and served as a training platform for crews of INS Arihant.
The Nerpa (INS Chakra) is an 8,140-tonne Project 971 (Shchuka-B class / NATO: Akula) nuclear-powered attack submarine. These submarines are renowned for their quiet operation and advanced combat systems.
