INS Vela (S24), meaning 'Stingray', is the fourth submarine of the first batch of six Kalvari-class submarines for the Indian Navy. It is a Scorpène-class submarine built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, under transfer of technology from Naval Group of France.
Construction & Commissioning
INS Vela was launched on 9 May 2019 and commissioned into service on 25 November 2021.
Design Philosophy
The Kalvari-class submarines incorporate a MESMA (Module d'Energie Sous-Marine Autonome) air-independent propulsion (AIP) system that allows the submarines to remain submerged for extended periods without surfacing to recharge batteries — significantly enhancing their stealth and operational range.
